What I have been reading lately
In an effort to get out of this writer’s block season that I find myself in, I have tasked myself with completing writing prompts, as mentioned in my last blog post. I have also been reading a lot of books.
These are the books I have been reading lately:
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
I had been hearing a lot about this book and how it was highly recommended by the reading community so I thought I would give it a try. It’s an easy read and the story itself is quite charming albeit a bit predictable. I did enjoy the octopus’ point of view and wished I had more of his quirky narration.
The Overstory by Richard Powers
This was another highly recommended book and I cannot stress this enough, I LOVED this book. I didn’t know what it was about beforehand. I tend not to read too much into what a book is about before reading it as I want to be surprised. It was such a cleverly written book that has the exceptional quality of making you feel alive. You know that feeling you get when you read a book that knows how to speak directly to your soul? That is The Overstory. Each chapter focuses on a tree and centers a story around that tree. I was lucky enough to be mentioned—at least the linden tree was.
Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose
In my last blog post, I mentioned Francine Prose’s book, Reading Like a Writer. Well, after writing about it, I pulled it down from my bookshelf and started reading it again. Despite being published almost twenty years ago, her ‘guide for people who love books and for those who want to write them’ is still relevant today. I truly recommend this book to those who want to write.
So those are the books I have been reading. I have an endless list of books to read and I’m looking forward to reading them! What have you been reading lately?
